Kenya Gears Up for AFCON 2027 with Major Stadium Upgrades and New Constructions
The Talanta City Sports Stadium is scheduled for completion in December of this year. This is one of the Kenyan stadiums that will host the AFCON in 2027. This was revealed by Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports. During his first visit to the Stadium construction site on January 23, 2025, Mvurya was impressed by the efforts of China Road and Bridge Corporation, the contractor assigned for this project. The Chinese-backed contractor also worked on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Mvurya stated that, based on today's discussion and what he's seen, he believes that the stadium will be completed by December. He's really delighted with the development made here and in other stadiums. The stadium facility's construction is currently underway on the third tier, where the terraces are currently being installed. As everyone can observe, there's an extensive amount of construction going on in each sector, including the VIP stands and terraces. Definitely, it's going well, Mvurya said after concluding the inspection.
Furthermore, Mvurya stated that the majority of football enthusiasts in the country are closely following the construction of this stadium. This is because Kenya will host the Africa Cup of Nations with Tanzania and Uganda. The Talanta Sports City Stadium is situated on 45.64 hectares of land along Ngong Road in Nairobi. The stadium will feature an outdoor training field, a conventional athletic field, and a rugby training field.
Regarding other stadium developments, the Cabinet Secretary verified that the renovations at Nyayo Stadium were completed once the floodlights were placed. The facility also features CAF offices, changing rooms and a playing field. Regarding the Kasarani Stadium, the Cabinet Secretary informed that the canopy roof was recently completed. The Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), which has been postponed until August 2025, would be held at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums. Other stadium facilities scheduled for construction include the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Eldoret's 64 Stadium and Bukhungu Stadium.
