Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of Sh50 Billion MTRH Construction Project

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has launched the construction of a major new medical complex - a 2,000 bed Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kiplombe, Soy Sub County, marking one of Kenya’s largest health infrastructure projects. The Sh50 billion quaternary facility will deliver highly specialized medical services, with Phase I accommodating 2,000 beds and Phase II expected to expand capacity to 4,000.

Duale emphasized that the long-delayed project, conceptualized in 2014, will now move quickly under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence, known for its efficient management of national construction works. He assured the public that the hospital will be completed within 18 months.

The project includes advanced clinical infrastructure for cardiology, oncology, transplant services, trauma care, pediatrics, and rehabilitation, positioning Eldoret as a major regional medical hub. Defence PS Dr. Patrick Mariru reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to timely delivery, while MTRH CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa noted that the new facility will significantly expand the current 1,200-bed capacity.

Local leaders, including Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii and Soy MP David Kiplagat, hailed the construction as transformative, noting it will create thousands of jobs, spur business growth, and include new access roads to support the massive hospital complex.
