Muvumba Project Construction Gains Momentum with Additional €45.4 Million Funding

Rwanda has secured an additional €45.4 million in financing from the African Development Bank Group to advance the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program, with a strong focus on expanding key water and irrigation infrastructure.

The newly approved funding package includes a €17.66 million loan from the African Development Fund and a €27.74 million loan from the African Development Bank. The resources will be used to construct a modern climate-resilient irrigation network that will serve 3,073 hectares of farmland, strengthening agricultural production and long-term water management.

With this latest commitment, the Bank Group’s total contribution to the program has increased to €166.9 million out of the overall €176 million project cost, while the Government of Rwanda will finance the remaining balance.

The Muvumba project’s central construction works including the multipurpose dam and hydropower plant, officially began in October 2023. By the end of March 2026, more than half of the civil works had already been completed, marking steady progress on one of Rwanda’s major strategic infrastructure developments.

Once completed, the dam will provide multiple benefits through integrated infrastructure systems, including power generation facilities, water supply networks, irrigation services, and opportunities for eco-tourism development.

Implementation of the large-scale construction and development program will continue through 2030 under the Rwanda Water Resources Board in collaboration with the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board.
