Kenya Secures Chinese Funding for Sh5 Billion Nithi Bridge Reconstruction

Kenya is set to embark on a major reconstruction of the Nithi Bridge in Tharaka Nithi County, one of the country’s deadliest road black spots, with completion targeted by 2027. President William Ruto has pledged Sh5 billion for the project, aimed at eliminating sharp curves, steep gradients, and other structural flaws that have caused repeated fatal accidents.
The redesigned bridge will span three kilometres between Marima and Mitheru markets and feature a central embankment to curb overtaking, enhancing safety for motorists.
According to President Ruto, Kenya’s road agencies KURA, KeRRA, and KeNHA were tasked with developing solutions, producing two options: a Sh5 billion plan and a more complex Sh50 billion alternative. The government has opted for the cost-effective Sh5 billion redesign.
The project has received a boost after China agreed to finance the construction under a broader infrastructure partnership announced during President Ruto’s recent visit to Beijing. The deal includes cooperation on several strategic projects such as extending the Standard Gauge Railway, expanding major highways, and building bypasses, alongside the Nithi Bridge works.
State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed the agreement, noting that China will play a central role in implementing these connectivity projects. Once complete, the new Nithi Bridge is expected to significantly reduce road fatalities, improve transport safety, and enhance the flow of goods and people across the region.
