KeNHA Kicks Off Construction of Major Kenya-South Sudan Road Project with AfDB Support

The multi-national South Sudan Road Corridor is being constructed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB). According to a recent notification released by KeNHA, the funding will be utilised to upgrade the road segments between Lesseru and Kitale and Morpus and Lokichar. The 193-kilometer road corridor, which runs through Lesseru via Nadapal and Kapoeta before arriving in Juba, South Sudan, spans the Great Rift Valley and links Kenya with South Sudan.

According to KeNHA, the African Development Fund and African Development Bank have provided funding to the Government of the Republic of Kenya for the Multinational: Kenya South Sudan Road Corridor Lesseru-Kitale as well as Morpus-Lokichar Road Upgrading Project Phase 1.

It further stated that the Lesseru-Nadapal-Kapoeta-Juba corridor, which is situated in the northwest of Kenya, includes the Project Road, Lesseru Kitale, and Morpus Lokichar Road Sections. The Authority claims that by enhancing transport connectivity between South Sudan and Kenya, the project will strengthen regional trade and integration.

The road project received Ksh28.8 billion from the African Development Bank, according to documents from the Global Centre on Adaptation. The project's specifics were initially revealed during a meeting of stakeholders that included the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the African Development Bank, KeNHA, and the Kenya Meteorological Department to discuss its execution.

The road upgrade will comprise civil works for the building of a single-carriageway road that is roughly seven metres wide, as well as bitumen re-carpeting of the highway. The civil works will also include the construction of service roads, town loop roads, and access roads, as well as the development of specific socioeconomic infrastructure. The World Bank investment was part of the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project (HoAGDP)'s Project Development Objective (PDO), which aimed to improve inter-country trade.
