Kenya Breaks Ground on Sh5 Billion China-Kenya International Commerce Center in Nairobi
Kenya has officially begun construction of the China-Kenya International Commerce Center, a landmark project valued at Sh5 billion (approximately USD 38.7 million), marking a new phase in infrastructure development aimed at boosting international trade and investment.
President William Ruto presided over the groundbreaking ceremony in Nairobi, where the 68,000-square-metre mixed-use complex will rise. The development is spearheaded by China Plaza Group Company and is designed to serve as a hub for global trade exhibitions, commercial exchanges, and hospitality.
According to President Ruto, the new commerce and exhibition center will include a world-class trade complex, a five-star hotel, and modern business facilities, providing space for both Chinese and Kenyan enterprises to showcase their products. Once completed, the project is expected to create over 3,000 jobs during and after construction, contributing directly to Kenya’s manufacturing and services sectors.
Ruto emphasized that the construction reflects strong investor confidence in Kenya’s economy, as well as the government’s commitment to transforming underutilized public land into productive commercial assets. The project aligns with national development frameworks such as Kenya Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, underscoring infrastructure as a key driver of sustainable growth.
When complete, the China-Kenya International Commerce Center will not only enhance Nairobi’s skyline but also strengthen Sino-Kenyan trade relations by positioning Kenya as a gateway for regional and global commerce.
