TANROADS-World Bank Alliance Powers Massive Road and Airport Upgrades Across Tanzania
The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has commended its strong collaboration with the World Bank, which is financing and supervising the construction of seven major transport infrastructure projects across the country. The initiatives spanning key road upgrades and airport expansion works form part of the Tanzania Transport Integration Project for Sustainability (TANTIPS).
During a recent project review session, Tanroads Director of Development Projects, Engineer Japherson Nnko, highlighted that the partnership has enabled Tanzania to roll out large-scale construction works aimed at improving mobility, strengthening logistics corridors, and enhancing resilience to climate change.
According to Engineer Nnko, the World Bank has committed $550 million (Sh1.3 trillion) to build four major road networks and upgrade three airports.
The major road construction projects include:
The 92-kilometre Lusaunga–Rusumo road in Kagera
The 104-kilometre Iringa–Msembe road in Iringa
The 206-kilometre Mtwara–Mingoyo–Masasi route, implemented in two phases
The 116-kilometre Rutukila–Songea road, which features a new bypass and is awaiting contract signing
On the aviation front, airport construction projects are underway in Tanga, Lake Manyara, and Iringa. Works at Tanga and Lake Manyara involve new runways, aprons, terminals, and supporting infrastructure. At Iringa Airport, the Government has already completed the runway and apron, while construction of a new passenger terminal is ongoing.
Engineer Nnko emphasized that strategic partnerships, particularly with the World Bank, are essential for fast-tracking construction efficiency and ensuring infrastructure investments contribute meaningfully to Tanzania’s economic growth. Discussions are also underway for additional financing to support road rehabilitation and prolong the lifespan of key transport corridors.
The Tanroads director noted that once completed, the projects will significantly boost economic expansion, especially in the southern regions of Ruvuma and Mtwara, which are witnessing rising commercial and investment activities. All construction works under TANTIPS are scheduled for completion by 2027.
